A retelling of my life in DC and all the stupid ass sh!t I get myself into...

Sunny Day

There are many wonderful things to enjoy on a beautiful early summer day. Today I was able to enjoy two of my favorites, tooling around in a Jeep with no doors and a yellow cup cake! Yum! There's just something so damned simple about a yellow cup cake with white frosting and being able to enjoy it brings an almost child like grin to your face. Maybe it's the fact that there's no polite knife and fork way to eat it so you are forced to be messy? Perhaps you remember elementary school when there were cupcakes for someones birthday and regardless of who you like/didn't like in your class everyone stopped for just a few minutes to enjoy this little treat and be happy. How’s this... we give everyone in the world a cup cake and all eat our cupcakes at the same time. Like one giant cupcake break! Logistically, this would probably be a total nightmare. But how great would it be if the whole world took 5 minutes out of their day to enjoy a cupcake and smile and laugh with one another?

The Jeep with no doors, well that should need no explanation. But I'll put it like this, if you've never experienced it, go and find a friend with a Jeep. Offer to help take the doors off and a tank of gas if they’ll just drive you around a bit. It doesn't matter where you go, it's just a great ride. I've always said this is as close as you can get to being on a bike (motorcycle) with out actually being on a bike. Trust me, it’s worth it. I don't recall ever seeing my grandfather smile ear to ear like he did when he hopped out of my Jeep with no doors.

Fcuk them

While you talk trash about me, I work hard to make sure you have a good time and have everything you need. When you question my abilities I still continue to ensure that you are cared for. When you berate me to my face in public, I smile and make sure that you are able to get home safely and prepare to do it all again next week. So, if being one of you guys means treating people the way you treat me... Thanks, but no thanks.

Love the New Look

Way to go Lay's! Going with a throw back look has brought you ahead of the game in presentation. Love the new bags you guys changed to. I notice b/c I eat your baked or fat free chips a good bit when I hit the subway. Yum Yum! (and pretty too!)

I have been busting my but to clean up my credit for the past how ever many years. As a result, I keep a very watchful eye on all of my active accounts. Well wouldn't you know it, some charges from showed up on my Amex the other day outta now where? WTF? Amex handled it like complete pro's, dealt with the company and reversed all the charges. Who evers account this was was clearly NOT me as I'd never heard of such a site till it showed up. I'm thinking, how bad do you need a date to steal a credit card number to join an online dating service?!?! (Kinda cool logo tho, I'll give the site that one)

Ok, so everything is handled charges reversed and I cancel that card since the numbers have been compromised for a new one. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I do I get a call from my boss telling me I'm going on travel. Ugh... my Amex is my travel card! Irony, you are a funny funny b!tch, ain't ya? In the grand sceme of things, not really that big of a deal b/c I do watch my accounts. But I've already had my accounts hijacked twice in my life and I'm careful about tracking it all. Imagine how much in free purchases hackers have gotten from people that just blindly pay the bill with out looking.

Dirty Dirty

WNDC last night was a great time. It started off with me working on a plate of $2 Nachos that had sooo much cheese and toppings that I ended up running out of chips and had a nice mixture of just goo on the plate that required a fork! Seriously, what's the cook doing back there? Injecting cheese every 5 seconds they are cooking? Wonderful!! The beers were also $2 so I had a few. Man do I love good deals, I think this might start becoming my usual Wednesday night spot. Seriously, food + a couple beers all for under $10? Can't beat that!

As soon as the beer special was over, we hauled a$$ over to another old time spot we used to frequent for some Karaoke and catch the tail end of 1/2 price bottles of wine. My buddy and I both ended up ordering a bottle of the Relax Riesling. Since I thought this was particularly entertaining, I signed us up to sing Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. OMG... I had nooooooooooooo idea that song was soooo freaking dirty! Check out the lyrics below... holy crap!

The evening went well with much singing and many bottles of wine for everyone until alas, it was time to call it a night. Everyone caught cabs and went their own way. What a fun night!

Oh oh

Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
When you want to come

Relax don't do it
When you want to to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Relax don't do it
When you want to suck it to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come
Come-oh oh oh

But shoot it in the right direction
Make making it your intention-ooh yeah
Live those dreams
Scheme those schemes
Got to hit me
Hit me
Hit me with those laser beams

I'm coming
I'm coming-yeah

Relax don't do it
When you want to go to it
Relax don't do it
When you want to come

Relax don't do it
When you want to suck it to it
Relax don't do it (love)
When you want to come
When you want to come
When you want to come

Get it up
The scene of love
Oh feel it

Relax relax relax
Higher higher relax

Nows the time, it's party time!

Expect too much?

Today I find myself reflecting on people that I interact with; be they co-workers, strangers, acquaintances, or people i consider good friends. And I am once again disappointed in quite a few. I know I push myself and ask a lot of myself, but think I ask very little of those around me. I guess it's for that reason that I get so disappointed when they let me down. Or perhaps my scale is off and I do ask a lot it just seems like very little to me? And once again, I've been told that I wear my heart on my sleeve. Is this a result of getting older? I know I used to be a lot colder and much more heartless. Then again, is this new development necessarily a bad thing? I'll ponder these issues over a little WNDC tonight. Mmmmmm... Nachos!

I live on my Google Calendar, it's my life schedule. This phenomena actually started with my ex. We tried keeping a calendar on excel so that we would know what was going on when, but ultimately it was simply easier to have a web based one and so my love of gCalendar began. Since, I've been syncing it to my Berry and updating on the go. It's been wonderful. Ok, so I lost a little when I upgraded to OS 4.5 which is frustrating but I made that error myself so I take a loss and move on. What is frustrating is I was checking my calendar just the other day, and yet again a few weeks have just gone missing!! WTF Google Calendar? Tighten up!

Just one Screw

No, not that kinda screw you dirty monkey, get your mind outta the gutter! I just replaced two bolts on my jeep that were really driving me nuts and I'm shocked at how pleased I am. I mean really, how much work was involved? Next to none. Cost of parts? $3 or something like that. But the result is freaking great! I'm glad I finally got offa my butt and fixed 'em!

Conference Time

Well, it's conference time again. Know what that means? 12-14 hour days for a week or so straight while burning leave from my day job! Ha! Really, who takes a vacation to go work? On the plus side, the vacation is doing what it's supposed to do. Taking me away from my day job so that I don't even think about it or the staff there. I totally don't miss it!

The conference is going smoothly tho, 2 hotels 1,600+ people... not bad. Lots of good folks over here, very interesting talks and the conversation is along the lines of products that I'm interested in as well. Transportation and Alt. Fuels. A bill just went to congress (I think/hope they'll kill it) to slash the Hydrogen Fuel research by 75%?!?! Are you kidding me? That's ridiculous. Hydrogen is currently our best hope of a long term solution to the energy issues that we are facing as a nation and a world. True, in the short term it's not ready. But for 20 years down the road, that's our ticket. I mean what do they expect fix the issue? Plug in hybrids? Yeah, right. Get a clue. I hope congress has their head out of their a$$es long enough to veto the hell out of that bill!!

Live Music?

I know I'm not generally fond of going to see live shows, but last night I made an exception. I went to see Federico Aubele at a small local Venue. Never heard of the guy? Probably not, he's not a huge name but makes some really cool music regardless. He's on the same label as Thievery Corporation (which I'm a huuuuge fan of). I heard this guy at the Outernational Tour a couple years ago and have just really enjoyed his sound ever since.

I went with my ex and a friend of hers. Now the funny thing is, when my ex and I were together we could never go to a show and have fun together. Ha!! Irony much? After the show, which was too short IMHO, she offered to give me a lift to meet up with some peeps in the city. Sure, it's only 1030ish, let's do it! We punch the destination into the Nav and head on that way. About 5 minutes into the trip, we are stuck in traffic and not 1, but 2 fire trucks pull up directly in front of the car! Not one or two cars away, I mean right in front of the car!!

Me being me, I take this as a sign… a big flashing sign with sirens that says, go home dumb a$$!! So, I listen for a change. After working a few hours, it's time to hit the hay. A short show, an autographed CD, and a cool bar. Nice night.

I've spent the past two days in Ohio on work travel. True, it started off with me over sleeping and missing my flight, but that doesn't take away from it. I've had a wonderful two days. As you might have noticed, I was totally in lust with my rental car there. I don't remember the last time I was sad to see a rental car go back. But in this case, the 2009 Volvo C70 was just perfect on the sunny days and clear cool nights that are Ohio in mid May. I think that's exactly what I needed to paint a smile across my face from ear to ear and help me clear my head from all the noise that's going on in it.

Work was good, I over came some small hurdles and saw some work friends that I don't see often. I participated in a training course as part instructor part general fix it guy. On that note, it was great to see my training manual appreciated and all the hours I spent flipping through it over and over and over again fixing images that were off by only 0.01" all seemed worth it... Nice! For some reason, I was really laid back (more so then usual) at my training session. I was confident, knew the material but I almost didn't care what they thought. The scores were great, so playing I don't give a fcuk clearly pays off with these type of folks.

I was referred to as a conundrum by one of the staff, but I have a hunch that that statement will get more clarification and possibly become a post all on it's own in time.

I've camped in the airport for a little while at this point and flying home from this trip for the first time in a while, I feel a little clarity in my thoughts and my life. That silly little rental car was the first heartfelt and sober ear to ear smile that has come across my face in weeks... it was refreshing and felt great! I think I was actually giddy driving around I felt so good. I know DC is my home and there are so many great things about it, but I'm just not looking forward to being there right now. Is it time to run? I don't think so. Is it time to move on with my life? Very possibly. The opportunity that I was scared of only a month or so ago, I now welcome as a new and exciting challenge. As a building block that will help me move past where I am now.

I'm not saying I'm going to change who I am or anything like that. Will I still be a party boy? Probably. I have a hunch that won't leave me till my death bed... and anyone that wants to put up with me better enjoy the ride with me. Will I still look out for the people around me? I'm certain that I will. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I feel ready. Ready for whatever is next. That's a good feeling. And I'm proud not to be afraid of it.

Mothers Day

Happy Mothers day out there to all you mom's. As a decent son, I spent the day with my mom yesterday hanging out. It was nice, but then again we get along pretty well. We got lost off the coast of MD in the bay for the better part of the day. She got to take her puppy to one of the biggest doggie beaches I have ever seen in my life! Granted, I haven't seen many but this did indeed look freakin huge. From there, we proceeded to get lost a couple times over looking for a decent bite to eat and had to settle on a quick snack at Micky D's to keep the day going for the time being and not starve! We drive through back roads of Southern MD looking for neighborhoods and houses near the water b/c it would be nice to have a spare house by the water to relax in.

A quick walk on the shore near the house we are checking out, and we are back on the road. Playing with that fancy Nav of hers takes us to Solomon's Island for a nice crab cake dinner on the water front. All in all, a great day. And most importantly, she had a blast!!

Ramblings of You

I'm not poetic by any means. Not upset about it, it's just a fact of life. Yet whenever I think about you, verses seem to flow into my head for no reason. I hate that every where I look I still think about you. Songs that come on the radio or my iPod trigger memories of you. Places I go remind me of you. Why can't I get you out of my head and off my mind? I know I'm out of yours, so why why why? I try to pick apart your faults in my head in an effort to see how terrible you are, but for some reason I can't seem to be upset about your short comings like normal.

I drove past the dealership and saw that convertible you told me about... White with a black top, woulda made for one hell of a midlife crisis toy. I think it might have been more of a 20 year present. 20's are cars right? Sigh. These thoughts just go round and round. Alcohol is a distraction sometimes, but unfortunately not always. I knew you made my head spin, but to this degree? I never would have thought it possible.

I'm the prince to your ballerina... I feed other peoples parking meters... I encourage the eating of ice cream... I would somersault in the sand with you.

I wish any of this made sense. I wish I could organize my thoughts in some tangible form, but they are scattered all over the place. I can't even seem to put pencil to paper to clear them as it were. I doubt you'll ever find this or read it or if you do make sense of it, but that's not what this post is for... it's for me to look back on. For me to wonder, "WTF?" in a while. So... how long is this while so I can go ahead and get to it??

Damn the Man

This past week I've actually had to earn my pay check. WTF? Work at work? That's crazy talk! Finishing up my software release and getting ready for a training session leaves very little time for idle chatting or blogging. I bet my reader has somewhere around 20,000+ posts for me to flip through by now. Speaking of which, what the hell happened to texts from last night? Why did you kill your RSS feed?!? I gotta have it on the go via google reader, can't keep checking your site! Get with it!

In all this busy week, you'll never guess what's gone to the way side... Working out! Ugh. (Well, maybe you did guess) Next week I will do better, there's just no excuse. I got my weight down a little, but then relapsed. I gotta hold strong to saying no to the junk food and yes to hitting the gym! Life always seems to get in the way! Speaking of junk food... I have a few happy hours coming up this evening which I'm sure will be a great time to reunite with old friends and possibly even make new ones!

I'm not quite sure what's going on with me right now, but I do know that walking across the room changing to go out this afternoon... tossing down the tie, this song really sums up the mood in the room. Have a listen, tell me what's on your mind. I'll post it or not based on what you want.

Some of the folks I work with really need to get a freakin life. I know that the project is important, but some of our staff works around the freaking clock. We aren't talking about fire fighters or EMT's or cops, office work. Paper pushing, number crunching, b!tchy email writing, birthday cake eating office work. Have you seen office space? Yeah, kinda like that. I'm not totally unreasonable, I can see once in a while there is a huuuuuuge deadline that we all dropped the ball on. Fine, we put in extra time and get it done. But on a daily basis, some of our folks start emailing at 5-6am and don't stop till 9+pm. Do they expect everyone to be online and in the system for 15 hours a day? It's this mentality that makes them look at me like I have 3 heads growing out of my neck when I tell them I have plans on a weekend or after 8pm. God forbid! I guess there are two schools of thought on this matter: I work to live, they all live to work.

I'm not upset, just an observation. Honestly, I feel bad for them. On your deathbed, you will never say "Wow, I wish I spent more time at the office or more time working."

Happy B-Day Dr. P. Haystack

Friday night, we went out for my buddies birthday. The adventure begins a little too early at around 4ish at one of my usual watering holes in Crystal City. I mean, you gotta eat before a looooong night of partying, doncha? Yeah you do! We get our chicken wings on… I <3 30 spice sauce, soooo tasty! After the snacks, we continue the libations with some shots for the Birthday boy before tabbing out and heading into the city. We catch a cab thinking we'll save time… we were wrong! Damn you 14th st. bridge!

Arriving at the theater, we have enough time to get in there and start saving seats for everyone that's coming with us but not time for much else. It's cool.. Do I really need 4 gallons of diet coke and a bucket of popcorn? Doubtful. The movie, Wolverine, was ok. I'm a marvel comics fan, so it was interesting to me. I don't recall what Stan Lee's cameo was, but I think I forgot to look. I bet he was a shop keeper in one of the Canada scenes or something random like that. Check it out on DVD or when it comes out on TBS is my suggestion to you all.

Moving on post movie, it's Rocketbar time to get the birthday boy good and drunk!! I think we all did a great job. A handful more joined us at the bar who were up for the challenge! As always, there was flirting, numbers changing hands, music, a little dancing (Hey, gotta cupid shuffle, right?), maaaaaany drinks, and everyone had a blast. I know that a few partied a bit too much b/c as they are hopping in a cab some of my other friends who had been partying a bit were all… umm, you guys should go on. Not sure we are trying to go that hard tonight! Ha!

Next stop, Archibald's. I'm a fan of this place, it's nice and dimly lit, the bar staff is pretty quick, and hey… it's a strip club, what's not to like?!?! Don't get confused as Archibald's and Fast Eddies are attached next door to each other. Archibald's is where you wanna go, don't let 'em send you up to Fast Eddies… That place tries to pretend like they are a normal restaurant by putting up some plants on the stages during the day time. Ha! No, pass. Around 2ish, everything happened at once. As I'm looking out for the birthday boy tossing him money for ladies and what not, another friend gets kicked out, and another friend just got cut off for being too drunk. Ugh. Handle your selves people!!

Tossing a handful of ones at my buddy, a bottle of water at the girl that's too drunk, I'm off to try to keep my other friend off of the bouncers. Ugh. Are you surprised? Look at the title of this blog! Ha! Long story short, no one went to jail. The birthday boy parked it in front of a stage till they closed for the evening with stacks of ones and good friends around him while I tossed the drunk girl in a cab with yet another bottle of water. Not a bad way to spend a birthday. Only thing we missed… late night munchies!!

Ok, when did all the muffins in this country get on freaking steroids?? Or is this just another perfect example about how far out of whack our sense of portion size is? My boss brought in muffins for everyone... by everyone I mean she brought in 24 muffins each bigger then both my fists combined for like 10 people. Holy hell!! I think a quarter of a muffin counts as a serving, doesn't it? It's not a craze or phenomena that's confined to one location or store, it's all across the board. Starbucks? Grocery Stores? The muffin mafia? Ok, I made that last one up, but I would totally eat at a muffin shop called The Muffin Mafia!
